At Canada Vein Clinics, we take great pride in providing our clients with the best varicose and spider vein treatments and procedures, offering each patient an improved quality of life. Our treatments have been performed countless times by our expert physicians, and are customized for optimal results and your own personal success.
There are many treatment options available for the removal of varicose and spider veins. We provide Sclerotherapy as an option for those who have smaller veins, or more premature venous insufficiency. This procedure offers an injectable alternative to the Mini-Phlebectomy or EVLT.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a method of treatment for varicose and spider veins in the legs. During treatment, a mild sclerosing solution is injected into the veins. The injectable agent irritates the walls of the vein, causing it to shrink in size. The vein eventually disappears and is reabsorbed into the affected leg.
Who is this treatment recommended for?
This method of varicose and spider vein treatment is often recommended for veins that are smaller or less developed in their condition. Reticular veins, which have similar characteristics to spider veins but appear larger and blue, may also be treated with Sclerotherapy.
If you suffer from large varicose veins, an alternative treatment such as EVLT, Mini-Phlebectomy, VenaSeal or ClariVein will be recommended. You and your CVC physician will discuss and weigh your options before deciding on a treatment, and the best course of action.
How many treatments does it take?
The number of veins injected in one session varies depending on the size, amount and location of the veins to be treated. Should you have multiple varicose or spider veins that require treatment, you may need several Sclerotherapy sessions to close all affected veins.
Benefits of Sclerotherapy:
- Removes the smaller beginning varicose veins
- Short treatment
- Virtually painless
- No laser required
- Performed directly in our clinic
- Relieves symptoms associated with varicose and spider veins
- Permanently closes treated veins
What type of tool is used in Sclerotherapy?
We use a transilluminating device called “VeinLight,” to visualize and localize varicosities and their origin, resulting in a highly effective treatment of varicose and spider veins.
Results and After Care
After the procedure, the leg is cleaned and wrapped in a compression dressing. This wrapping is to be worn for the remainder of the day. Compression stockings are required for the next few days following your treatment, as instructed by your physician. Any bruising will typically subside within one week of your procedure.
All regular activities can be resumed immediately following the procedure though aerobics and vigorous exercises are not permitted for up to one week after Sclerotherapy. We do however recommend walking several times daily to help increase circulation to the deeper veins in the leg so that the blood can be properly redirected.
For the most effective and lasting results, we encourage you to modify your diet and lifestyle to promote healthy veins in the future. Being overweight or living a sedentary lifestyle contribute to increased risk for venous insufficiency. Improving your overall health will have a positive effect on your veins and help you to live with the quality of life you deserve.
Sclerotherapy is very effective and safe for most patients. Please note that several sessions may be required to achieve complete elimination of varicose and spider veins. If you feel that you may benefit from the Sclerotherapy procedure and are experiencing painful varicose veins, we invite you to schedule your consultation with a specialist at Canada Vein Clinics.
