Venous insufficiency happens when the veins in parts of the body no longer function as they should in order to make sure the blood flows properly through the body. The two most common conditions that result in this insufficiency are varicose veins and spider veins. Fortunately, both conditions are treatable. One of the best treatments out there for varicose veins is laser vein removal via endovenous laser therapy.
Varicose veins usually develop in the legs. The reason for this is that the blood has a longer distance to travel when going from the lower legs to the heart than it does from other parts of the body. In addition, since much of a person’s time is spent sitting or standing, the blood must be pumped against the pull of gravity as well. This force could make the blood flow backwards in these veins if nothing were present to counteract it. Inside the veins are valves that are in place to allow the blood to flow only one way. As the heart pumps, these valves open and let the blood pass through. Between beats, the valves close to keep the blood from flowing backwards because of the gravitational pull.
Sometimes, these valves quit functioning as they should. This allows the blood to back up inside the veins as the natural pumping action of the heart works against the pull of gravity on the blood in the leg veins. This causes the blood to pool. As a result of the pooling, added pressure is applied against the vessel walls from the inside. This causes them to become bigger, developing into varicose veins.
Varicose veins will often bulge out from the skin in a way that makes them very noticeable. In addition to the bulging, they are frequently blue. For this reason, many people seek treatment in order to improve their appearance. However, varicose veins can cause pain and other discomforts as well. They can itch, burn and cause swelling, especially in the lower legs and around the ankles.
Laser vein removal is a common treatment method for the removal of veins that are contributing to venous insufficiency. During treatment, laser energy is directed inside the veins that are to be removed. The heat from the laser safely destroys the veins, and the blood flow that was formerly going through those veins is directed to other, healthier vessels. The tissue that is left of the destroyed veins begins to disappear from sight as it is absorbed by the body.
