Restless leg syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes one to have an irresistible urge to move around in order to be more comfortable. Those who have this syndrome usually stretch, walk around or take part in any other physical activity to feel better. However, these activities only provide temporary relief hence the uncomfortable feeling returns after a while. The syndrome does not seem serious and more often than not, it is overlooked. However, it causes distress to the sufferer especially during leisure activities that involve sitting for long periods of time.
This syndrome can be brought about by various things including:
- Vein disease
- Sleep apnea
- Iron deficiency
- Magnesium deficiency
- Thyroid disease
The good news is that there is treatment available depending on the cause of the syndrome. If you have varicose veins or any other vein problem that causes the restless leg syndrome, a number of treatments are available at the Canada Vein clinics. They have specialists in over 8 locations who can help you receive proper treatment.
Therapy for Restless Leg Syndrome
The most effective treatment for restless leg syndrome that is caused by vein issues is endovenous laser therapy. For spider or reticular veins – sclerotherapy can be used. One of the common things these therapies have in common is that they are minimally invasive and they allow the patients to get back to their normal activities within a short period of time, at times even on the same day. Before any treatment is administered, an ultrasound is performed in order to identify problematic veins that need to be treated.
What is Involved?
- Sclerotherapy
This procedure involves using a small needle to inject a solution directly to the problematic vein. The solution closes the vein by causing it to swell and stick together. The vessel will turn into a scar tissue after some time and fade away. The other veins that are healthy will take up the work of transporting blood to the heart.
- Endovenous Laser Therapy
This treatment procedure involves use of an optical fiber. The optical fiber is inserted into the problematic vein and laser light is shone into the vein’s interior. This results in contraction of the vein and it eventually collapses. The procedure is performed when the patient is awake but an anesthetic will be injected on the leg to numb it before the procedure.
The treatments take a short time, about 30 minutes and sometimes (with sclerotherapy) it may be necessary for you to undergo more than one treatment session. If you want to book an appointment, call 1-888-876-8346.
