Many patients find themselves struggling to stay active with their busy schedules, particularly in the colder Winter months. We have compiled a list of methods and suggestions to help promote proper vein health by including physical activity into your day!
1. Walking instead of taking the elevator
This may seem like an obvious way to get in some extra steps, but many people do not choose the stairs when given this choice as they do not believe that it has a significant beneficial effect on the legs. Over time, choosing to take the stairs instead of the elevator will add up and can drastically promote healthy circulation in your blood vessels which benefits the veins.
2. Investing in a standing/treadmill desk
While these types of desks are more unconventional and may come at a higher price point than regular desks, they carry a myriad of benefits. Treadmill desks are the most beneficial for yourlegs as they allow you to complete your daily tasks and work while walking, which promotes blood circulation and prevents the development of varicose veins. Standing desks are also a good alternative to seated desks as they allow you to move and stretch your legs while working. It is important to take the opportunity to alternate between the seated and standing position as this helps to prevent the formation of varicose veins.
3. Using alternate transportation methods
An extremely beneficial way to incorporate more walking or exercise throughout your day is by biking or walking to your destination. There are typically walking or biking routes that are accessible to get you where you need to go while allowing you to stay active! If it is not possible to walk or bike, we suggest parking far away from where you need to go, to give yourself the opportunity to get more steps in during the day.
4. Stretching or working out during breaks
To keep your day productive we suggest that you use your breaks as time to engage in physical activity. It could be by standing up and stretching for a few minutes in between tasks, or going for a walk when given a longer break. These small bursts of activity will pay off by boosting your productivity while also allowing you to incorporate exercise into your day!
5. Engaging in exercises at your desk
If a standing desk or more frequent breaks are not an option, we suggest that you engage in small exercise movements while working. Heel raises or leg extensions can be done without moving from your desk or hindering your work. This minimal activity is still beneficial to maintain proper blood circulation and can help to minimize the symptoms associated with varicose veins.
