For both men and women, varicose veins can at the very least negatively impact appearance and can be painful and contribute to serious health problems if they are not treated. At our office in Ottawa, you will find several varicose vein treatment methods that will remove the affected veins completely and allow blood to flow through healthy veins.
Varicose veins and spider veins develop because the vein walls and valves become weak. This usually happens because they are overworked due to the person’s lifestyle that contributes to the development of damaged veins. Heredity is another major factor in the development of varicose veins.
If the condition is mild, wearing compression stockings may be all you need. However, for more severe cases, there are several varicose vein treatment methods that are available at our office in Ottawa.
• Sclerotherapy – This is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses a special solution called a sclerosant that is injected into the affected vein to damage the vein walls so they collapse. Once the vein is destroyed, it will gradually be absorbed by the surrounding tissue and disappear. The injection is very small and typically does not require an anesthetic.
• Laser vein removal – Laser light that reacts as heat with the vein wall is also used to damage the vein. A very thin catheter is inserted into the vein and a laser heats the tip. The catheter is slowly pulled out and the heat damages the vein wall. This may also be done with radiofrequency.
• Mini-phlebectomy – This procedure involves a series of tiny punctures through which the vein is carefully removed.
Other options for varicose vein treatment include ClariVein treatment and VenaSeal. You can learn more about these treatments during your initial consultation with us in Ottawa.
Once your varicose veins have been removed, it is important to make sure other veins don’t develop. This may require lifestyle changes. For example, if you sit for many hours at a stretch, you must get up and walk around every so often to promote blood circulation. If you stand for many hours at a stretch, you should sit with your feet raised multiple times throughout the day so the blood doesn’t pool in your lower legs.
